What Should I Include in My Activities List?

Your activities list is one of the key parts of your college application. It gives admissions officers a snapshot of how you’ve spent your time outside the classroom and what you value beyond academics. A well-crafted activities list not only highlights your involvement in extracurriculars but also demonstrates your passions, leadership, and commitment.  

When filling out your list, it’s essential to think carefully about what to include. Here are some tips on how to create a standout activities list that promotes your strengths and interests.

Focus on Depth Over Breadth

When choosing what to include, it’s more important to showcase the depth of your involvement than to list every activity you’ve ever participated in. Admissions officers want to see that you are dedicated to a few activities and that you’ve made a meaningful impact. If you’ve been a member of a club for several years, held leadership positions, or contributed in a significant way, those experiences should be highlighted.  

For example, if you’ve been involved in your school’s debate team all four years, mention specific accomplishments or how you’ve grown through the experience. Don’t just list the name of the club; show how your role within it has developed and the skills you’ve gained.

Prioritize Leadership Roles

Leadership is one of the most sought-after qualities in a college applicant. If you’ve held a leadership role in any activity, make sure to highlight it. This could include being the president of a club, captain of a sports team, editor of a school newspaper, or a team leader in a community service project.  

Colleges value students who can inspire, motivate, and organize others. If you’ve been responsible for leading meetings, coordinating events, or making decisions, be sure to explain how you contributed to the success of the activity. Even if your leadership role wasn’t official, but you still led in some capacity, mention how you influenced others or took on additional responsibilities.

Include a Mix of Activities

Emphasize Consistency and Long-Term Commitment

Colleges look for applicants who demonstrate long-term commitment to activities. Being involved in the same activity for several years, or steadily increasing your involvement over time, shows that you’re dedicated and have the ability to manage your time effectively.  

If you’ve participated in the same activity for multiple years, mention how your role evolved. Perhaps you started as a member and worked your way up to a leadership position or took on more responsibility as you grew. Consistency demonstrates that you’re not only interested in something but that you’re committed to it over time.

Include Work Experience

If you’ve had a job or internship, include it on your activities list, as it can provide valuable insight into your work ethic, responsibility, and time management skills. Part-time jobs, internships, or volunteer positions show that you can balance academics with other commitments. They also highlight your initiative and ability to contribute to the community or workplace.  

When listing work experience, describe your responsibilities and how you contributed to the organization. If possible, mention specific skills or accomplishments, such as improving efficiency, helping with customer relations, or working on projects. This shows colleges that you’re not only academically driven but also capable of handling the responsibilities of a job.

Don’t Forget About Volunteer and Community Service Work

Colleges appreciate applicants who are committed to their communities and show a willingness to give back. Including volunteer work or community service on your activities list can demonstrate that you are empathetic, responsible, and socially aware.
